Ariel Atom 4R Testing

The Ariel atom 4r factory tune

We’ve a long history with Ariel. The very first cars were tuned on our Dyno in 2007 on Hondata. We are very lucky to have been involved back then. I still remember the cars at the time, being wild. We have all got used to the Ariel Atom now, nearly 20 years on. Back at the time, it genuinely felt like the ground breaking thing that it was. It was something special, and you knew it was something special by looking at it. Back then, the engines used were the K20A2.

Fast forward 15 years, and the Ariel Atom has evolved. We all know the Atom story and progression, most reading this are Petrolheads. The latest revision of the Atom is powered by the Civic Type-R K20C1 engine. The engine is turbocharged from factory. It also has VVT, and V-Tec. Not to mention Gdi. The engine can adhere to Euro 6. In the Civic, this produces a strong 306bhp from the factory. This was the natural progression for Ariel.

The Ariel Atom 4R, is the ‘balls out’ version of the Atom 4. There are lots of reviews on the car all over the internet. All positive. Ariel really have hit the nail on the head with this thing. It’s genuinely a masterpiece. I’m pretty picky, I look at the details. The panels are all hand fitted, everything is bespoke to each car. Each car is built by one person. Its not your usual factory line setup.

The 4R is fitted with various extra Aero panels, which sets it apart from the Atom 4. It’s visually different. It looks crazy. It also has the extra hardware, to make it more powerful. The team at Ariel had already sorted among other things the double capacity intercooler. This sticks out into a new ‘side pod’. We then got involved, working closely with the team at Ariel to build a new bespoke calibration for the 4R. Applying some new custom firmware into the MBE ECU, to allow us to do justice to this beast. A ground up tune has been applied, forming the basis of what will find it’s way onto the ECU’s of the whole Atom 4 range eventually. Improvements in boost control, torque and peak power. We’ve tried to maintain a fluent power curve, and ultimately provide a fantastic driving experience.

We always enjoy being able to work with companies like Ariel, it’s a genuine pleasure and is an exciting experience for a Petrolhead like me!
